3/8" Rib Lath

3/8 inch galvanized rib lath sheet

Our 3/8" rib lath is a galvanized expanded metal lath with full-depth ribs running the length of every sheet. The ribs keep the sheet flat and stiff between supports, so it holds its shape while it is fixed and while plaster or stucco goes on. Choose the plain sheet for general lathing, or the paper-backed version, sometimes called spray rib lath, when the coating will be sprayed.

Where it is used

Use 3/8" rib lath as the base for stucco and cement plaster on exterior walls, soffits and ceilings, and as a plaster base for interior walls and ceilings. Choose the paper-backed version when the lath is fixed directly to framing and the coating will be sprayed.

Why Builders Choose It

Stiff, flat sheets Full 3/8" ribs run along the sheet at about 4 in. spacing. The sheet resists sagging between supports and can span framing up to 24 in. on center.
Paper-backed option for spraying Strips of kraft paper are bonded to the lath at the factory. They stop spray-applied stucco from passing through the mesh, which reduces waste and keeps the work area cleaner.
One sheet for walls and ceilings The lath can be fixed to vertical or overhead framing, following your project's lathing specification.
A strong key for the coating The expanded openings between the ribs let plaster and stucco press through and set into a solid, locked layer.
Galvanized for corrosion protection Made from hot-dip galvanized steel with a G60 zinc coating as standard. A heavier G90 coating is available on request.

3/4" High Rib Lath

Our 3/4" high rib lath is an expanded metal lath with deep longitudinal ribs, 19–20 mm high, in place of the 3/8" rib. The deeper ribs add strength under load, so the sheet can serve as a rigid plaster backing and also as formwork that stays inside the concrete. In the trade it is also known as stay form or stay-in-place formwork lath.

Plaster and render backing

Fix it to ceilings, walls and stud partitions as a firm base for plaster or render. It also helps with old or damaged masonry. Where the wall face has crumbled or softened and no longer gives plaster a reliable key, the lath is fixed over it and supplies a new one.

Permanent formwork for concrete

In building and civil engineering work, the ribbed sheet is set where concrete will be placed and stays in the finished structure. Nothing has to be stripped out afterwards, and the sheet can be cut and shaped to follow the profile of the pour.

Why choose it

  • Deep 19–20 mm ribs that stand up to stress better than flat diamond lath
  • Stays in place as formwork, so there is no stripping step
  • Can be cut and shaped on site
  • One product for both plaster backing and concrete formwork
  • 27" × 97" sheets, or a width series from 200 to 700 mm

Rib Lath FAQ

What is rib lath used for?

Rib lath is a galvanized expanded metal lath with raised ribs. It is used as a stiff base for plaster, render and stucco on walls, ceilings, soffits and partitions. The deeper 3/4" type is also used as permanent formwork for concrete.

What is the difference between 3/8" rib lath and 3/4" high rib lath?

The difference is the rib depth. 3/8" rib lath (approx. 9.5 mm ribs) is the standard choice for stucco and plaster. 3/4" high rib lath has 19–20 mm ribs, which add strength under load, and is used for rigid plaster backing and for permanent concrete formwork.

Is "high rib lath" the same as 3/8" rib lath?

Some suppliers in North America use "high rib lath" for 3/8" sheets. On this page, high rib refers to the deeper 3/4" (19–20 mm) type, and 3/8" is simply called rib lath. If you are unsure which one your specification calls for, send it to us and we will confirm.

What is paper-backed (spray) rib lath?

It is 3/8" rib lath with kraft paper strips bonded on at the factory. The paper stops spray-applied stucco from passing through the mesh, which reduces waste. Use plain rib lath when spraying is not part of the job.

How far can 3/8" rib lath span?

3/8" rib lath can span framing up to 24 in. on center. Always follow your project's lathing specification and local requirements.

Can 3/4" high rib lath be used as permanent formwork?

Yes. It is set where concrete will be placed and stays in the finished structure, so nothing has to be stripped out afterwards.

What sizes are available?

3/8" rib lath comes in approx. 27" × 97" sheets. 3/4" high rib lath comes in 27" × 97" sheets and in widths of 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 mm, with lengths from 2.0 to 2.5 m. Other rib heights, widths and lengths can be made to order.

What zinc coating do you use?

3/8" rib lath is made from hot-dip galvanized steel with a G60 zinc coating as standard, and G90 is available on request. Tell us the coating you need when you request a quote.

What can be customized?

Length (2.0–2.5 m), thickness (0.15–0.6 mm), rib height (5–20 mm), width, zinc coating (G60 or G90), backing and pallet packing. Send your specification with your quote request.

What is the minimum order and how is it packed?

The minimum order is 1 piece for both standard and custom rib lath. 3/4" high rib lath is packed on pallets of 250, 300 or 400 pieces. Send us your quantity and destination port for pricing.

Can I get a sample first?

Yes, samples are available. Tell us the rib lath type and specification you want to check.

Can you provide test reports or documentation?

Tell us which documentation your project requires, and we will confirm what we can provide for your order.
